About the College

Shri Ganeshdas Rathi Chhatralay Samiti, the parent body of the college, was founded in the year 1950 with a generous grant of Rs. 50,000/-by Shri Rai Bahadur Ganeshdasji Rathi, a good Samaritan to provide hostel facility for Rajasthani students from rural areas. The society has a noble mission of removal of the ignorance from the minds of the people by providing them education and nourishing them with selfless work, enlightening learning and compassionate service to humanity. This mission of nourishing the spirit of our ignited minds percolates each and every activity run by the society thereby reflecting effective leadership and humanitarian approach in governance.

Later on, the Samiti felt the need for establishing an institution of higher education which materialized with the establishment of Raj Mahavidyalaya in 1960. The college was later on renamed as Smt. Kesharbai Lahoti Mahavidyalaya after the generous and philanthropic lady from the region, Hon. Smt. Kesharbai Lahoti. The college was founded at such a point of time when thinking of higher education was like asking for the moon especially for the masses, as there were very few educational institutes imparting higher education.

Under the stewardship of the first Principal Shri. G. R. Kotwal, the college added Commerce Faculty on 20th June 1962 to the existing Arts and Social Science Faculties. Education stands for humanism, for tolerance, for reason, for adventure of ideas and for the search for truth. It stands for the onward march of the human race towards ever higher objectives. Having a strong and undeniable faith in this statement, Smt Kesharbai Lahoti College has continued its pious and perennial pilgrimage with the keys that unlock the doors to excellence i.e. the will to win, the desire to succeed and the urge to reach our full potential. The college has the glory of being visited by the stalwarts like Late Shri Atal Bihari Vajapayee, Osho Rajnish, Late Harivanshrai Bachchan and many other eminent personalities. Thus the college has inherited a rich heritage and left an indelible mark in the educational and social life of Amravati and won applause from the general public as well as the discerning persons of the region.

The sapling, which was planted six decades ago, has blossomed into a full-grown tree providing academic opportunities to maximum number of youngsters. The Society being an iota in the vast ocean of Education has definitely been contributing its mite towards the attainment of quality and excellence. Recently, the Society has been recognized as Marwari Linguistic Minority Educational Society by the Government of Maharashtra.

Lead me from darkness to light – this prayer taken from Rigveda is the noble and exalted mission of Shri. Ganeshdas Rathi Shiksha Samiti. Being an educational Institution for higher education, established and run by Shri. Ganeshdas Rathi Shiksha Samiti, Smt. Kesharbai Lahoti Mahavidyalaya becomes a natural heir to this mission of the Society and rightly adopted it so. Thus the noble mission of this college is removal of darkness from human mind through education and thereby bring light and wisdom into human life. Right from its inception in 1960, the college has steadily and sincerely endeavoured to bring this noble mission to fruition.
