About the School

The nucleus of the educational citadel B.H.U. is C.H.S. It is the “Tapobhumi” of mother Annie Besent and Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya ji. This institution has proudly assimilated the history of educational development. Founded on 7th July 1898 as Central Hindu College, the present C.H.S. is situated at Kamachha, spread capaciously and housed in magnificent and glorious buildings.

Classes from VI to XII for boys are run here. The school is furnished for imparting the knowledge of Science, Commerce, Arts and Agriculture. Laboratories equipped with modern apparatuses are there to impart the practical/applied knowledge of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Agriculture, Psychology and Geography. Besides, there are decent and useful workshops for vocational training of Craft, Drawing, Computer and Fruit preservation.

For complete and comprehensive development of the students the school provides games and sports and health education. The school has a vast playground and a gymnasium hall. The school organizes different sports of Football, Cricket, Basketball, Badminton, Table-tennis and athletics.

To help the meritorious but poor students the school has a fund by the name Vidyarathi Sahayak Sabha that provides financial help to such students. In order to run suitable Co-curricular activities the school has been divided in four Houses called STAR i.e. Shivaji, Tagore, Ashok and Raman. Joint cultural program is conducted every Saturday. In this cultural program many competitions in elocution, acting, recitation are conducted. In daily assembly news reading, thought of the day, short speech and news writing are also done by the houses according to their term. To create special awareness in Mathematics and Science the school has been organizing Ramanujan Memorial Mathematics Contest and Sir C.V. Raman Science Quiz since 1988. Most of the prestigious schools of the district participate in these contests.

It is a matter of great pride that every year many students clear engineering, medical entrance examination and many other examinations.
The Central Hindu Boys School had been established on July 7, 1898 in a rented house at Karnaghanta in Varanasi by noted freedom fighter , renowned Social Worker ,very kind hearted figure, an Irish lady Dr. Annie Besant. After that the then Kashi Naresh Maharaja Prabhu Narayan Singh donated a building in Kamachha where Dr. Annie Besant had shifted the college on March 1899 .

On the basis of request letter, senate of Allahabad University approved this college up to intermediate level.

Dr. Arthur Richardson, a Science graduate from England became the first Principal of this school on honorarium basis.

Dr. Annie Besant handed over the college and school to society of Banaras Hindu University in 1914 with the condition that this institution shall be maintained and looked after by the Banaras Hindu University. Up to 1976, the Banaras Hindu University had been conducting X class examinations of the school as Admission Examination. Various Pre university courses, e.g. Pre Medical, Pre. Engineering, Pre Agriculture etc. at XI & XII class level were introduced from time to time. The Pre University courses ran here until the university adopted new 10+2 education system in 1976, when the school was affiliated to CBSE for examination of X & XII class. The great astronomer and Meteorologist Dr. J.V. Narilakar had been the student of this institution.
