About the School
St John’s School-Whitehall, Shillong, was founded in 1974 by Mr Robert Z. Street and his wife, Jean. Their deep and abiding commitment to education as seasoned educators with a shared vision of academic excellence, integrity, and service inspired the creation of this institution. Recognising the pressing need for a high-quality English-medium school in Shillong in 1973, they sought to create an institution that would serve not only the children of the city but also those from remote regions across the Northeast, where such educational opportunities were scarce at that time.
With unwavering dedication, we began the school’s journey in a modest, rented bungalow named Quasar Enver on Tripura Castle Road in 1974. with an initial number of just 31 students, 29 of whom were boarders. Despite its humble beginnings, the school quickly gained attention for its commitment to nurturing young minds. In just two years, on October 30th, 1976. the school moved to its present location, where purpose-built facilities began to rise amidst the whispering pines of Shillong.
Over the decades. St John’s has grown into a respected institution with a proud legacy. It stands today on a once serene three-acre campus, home to students from Northeast India, many of whom were the boarders. Throughout its history, the school has operated independently, without government grants, trust funds, or endowments, relying solely on tuition fees and a shared sense of mission. This financial self-reliance, a testament to the founders’ belief in the power of vision, perseverance, and community support, is a remarkable achievement.
The campus is well-equipped to support a holistic education. Several playgrounds provide space for outdoor sporting events, including athletics, football, basketball, volleyball, roller skating and hockey. Indoor recreational activities such as table tennis are also available, along with a fully equipped gymnasium that promotes physical fitness and well-being among students. These facilities reflect our unwavering commitment to ensuring that physical development is integral to a well-rounded education.
In a world increasingly focused on academic results, music remains a vital part in our school curriculum.
In keeping with the school’s evolving vision to serve the educational needs of the region, St John’s has also expanded to include a college. The college, established in 1975, currently offers courses in the arts stream, with plans to introduce courses in geography and science in the near future. This marks a significant step in increasing access to higher education within the same nurturing and value-driven environment.
At its core, St John’s is driven by a mission to educate not only the mind but also the heart. Our approach to education is holistic and grounded in values that shape character and guide individuals throughout their lives. We strive to cultivate:
A strong moral foundation rooted in integrity and empathy.
Personal growth is fostered within a community of love and friendship.
A resilient and relevant faith in an ever-changing and uncertain world.
A sense of social responsibility that inspires service beyond self.
A community spirit reflecting the Christian ethos embodied in our school motto:
“PROXIMOS AMA SICUT TE IPSUM”, “Love Your Neighbours as Yourself.” •
The success of St John’s is best measured by the achievements of its alumni. Our graduates have gone on to become doctors, scientists, justices, entrepreneurs, public servants and leaders, making significant contributions in their respective fields. They carry forward the values instilled in them at St John’s and contribute meaningfully to society, serving as inspiring role models for current and future students.
As we reflect on this remarkable journey, we do so with immense pride and gratitude. What began as a dream in 1973 has blossomed into a vibrant institution dedicated to excellence in education and the formation of responsible, compassionate citizens. As we look to the future, our commitment remains steadfast: to educate, empower, and inspire—faithfully upholding the vision on which St John’s was founded.
