About the School
Yadavindra Public School, Patiala, widely recognized as one of the premier Indian Public Schools, stands as a beacon of excellence in education. Established in 1948 by the visionary His Highness Maharajadhiraj Yadavindra Singh of the illustrious Phulkian Dynasty of Patiala, YPS, Patiala, has cultivated a legacy of distinction. As an English Medium Co-Educational Boarding-cum-Day school, it has consistently fostered academic rigor, character development, and holistic growth, nurturing generations of students to excel in every sphere of life.
Origins and History
Yadavindra Public School, Patiala, was established as a prestigious alternative to the renowned Aitchison College, Lahore, Pakistan, the only Public School in Pre-Partition Punjab. The evacuee students, untimely uprooted from Aitchison College, found themselves deprived of an educational institution of a similar rank and standing in India. In response, they appealed to His Highness Maharajadhiraj Yadavindra Singh, an alumnus of Aitchison, to bring his long-cherished vision of founding a public school to life.
With characteristic nobility and foresight, His Highness readily embraced the idea, driven by his belief in a school open to all, irrespective of caste, color, or creed. Unlike the restrictive admission policies of Aitchison College, YPS was designed to serve students from all walks of life, not just the aristocracy and nobility. To bring this vision to fruition, a six-member committee, under the guidance of His Highness, selected the Yadavindra Stadium for classrooms and Bhupindra Kothi for the boarding house in October 1947. Less than a year later, on 2nd February 1948, YPS began its journey with 21 students and 9 teachers.
The school’s first Headmaster, Rai Bahadur Dhaniram Kapila, laid the foundation for a residential institution with the establishment of Mohindra House, named after Maharani Mohinder Kaur, the wife of the school’s founder, in its inaugural year. Dhaniram House and Phulkian House followed in 1950 and 1953, respectively, honoring the first Headmaster and the Phulkian Dynasty of Patiala. Significant milestones in the school’s early years include joining the IPSC federation in 1950, becoming co-educational in 1954, and affiliating with the CISCE board in 1958. Under the stewardship of eminent leaders, YPS has flourished into one of India’s leading centers of learning, embodying a legacy of excellence that continues to inspire generations.
The true essence of a school, we believe, is gauged by its ability to nurture its students as per the vision it embodies. YPS, Patiala has been successfully doing that for more than seven decades now- giving the right direction, the right education and the right values to its students.
The school’s enlightening motto, ‘Vidya, Vinay, Veerta’ -Wisdom, Virtue, Valour characteristically speaks of the qualitative all-round education that the School provides to its boys and girls, with a belief that true education is a growth, not that of the body or the mind alone, but a blend of both in the true spirit of the term.
YPS, envisioned as a fully-boarding school at the time of its inception, is presently working towards its next big goal of having complete residentiality of a full boarding school. This is being done with the belief that such a step will benefit both the students and the legacy of YPS in multiple ways. The students shall remain constantly under the supervision and care of the school faculty and will be able to avail and make use of the ample facilities provided by the school to their maximum potential. To this end, the school has lately introduced many measures to improve the quality of boarding life in the campus.
What holds testament to the faith the parents have in the institution is the fact that YPS, Patiala has the distinction of now enrolling fourth generation students, showcasing the trust and loyalty of the alumni, who seek to give their children the same transformative education they received.
Expressing metaphorically, it may be said,
“At YPS, Patiala, a Yadavindrian is, and forever remains a learner. He is taught to learn and draw inspiration from all the good he sees around him. The inspiring lines of Pierre de Coubertinon on the school wall teach him to be a fighter, if not a winner always.
The grand old clock tower standing silently, but solemnly by the school stadium, inspires him to stand firm and tall, even in adversity. The school crest is a constant reminder to him to be ever virtuous inthought, valorous in deeds and humble at heart.
He looks at the school flag every morning and his heart fills with pride to look at the three House colours – the maroon for passion , the yellow for dignity, prestige and honour and the sky blue is for him a symbol of peace, quietude and tranquillity . These are the tokens, the signs, the remembrances he shall carry forth into the world …these are the values he shall grow up with and these are the virtues he shall cherish for the rest of his life.
YPS, Patiala has meaningfully shaped the lives of thousands. Many milestones have been achieved in all fields, but the school does not sit complacently on its laurels. Having celebrated its 75th Jubilee in February, 2023, Yadavindra Public School, Patiala, has proudly stepped into the last quarter for its centennial.
