About Kurukshetra
Kurukshetra is renowned all over the world for its historical and religious significance. The name Kurukshetra is associated with the legendary king Kuru and this association has been referred to in the Puranas as well. Kurukshetra is regarded as the cradle of Indian civilization and culture since most of the Vedic literature is believe to have been composed here.
Kurukshetra is famous as the battlefield of the Epic War of Mahabharta and also as the birth place of the Song Celestial, the Bhagvad Gita. The holy Gita is the divine message which Lord Krishna delivered to Arjuna when, on the eve of the Great War, He found Arjuna wavering from his duty to fight against evil on seeing his kin on the other side of the front.
In the very first verse of the Gita, Kurukshetra is described as Dharamkshetra, the field of righteousness.
The present day Kurukshetra is a famous tourist attraction for pilgrims from all over India and abroad. It is well connected by rail as well as road. It is situated on the main railway line between Delhi and Ambala, Chandigarh, Amritsar etc. It is also situated on the famous GT Road (NH-I) 160 kms. north of Delhi towards Ambala. It is the district headquarter of Kurukshetra district of Haryana. It is also renowned for its educational institutions like Kurukshetra University, National Institute of Technology and Ayurvedic College among others.
